Apple May Be Working on Its Own Smart Glasses, Report Says

Apple could soon enter the smart eyewear race.

After launching the Vision Pro mixed reality headset, the tech giant is now exploring the idea of smart glasses, according to a recent Bloomberg report. The internal project, reportedly codenamed “Atlas,” involved Apple employees testing and analyzing current smart glasses already available on the market.

Apple frequently runs these behind-the-scenes studies when it’s considering a new product category. “Testing and developing products that all can come to love is very important to what we do at Apple,” said a leaked internal email from its California headquarters, as cited by Bloomberg.

If Apple decides to move forward, it will likely be several years before a final product hits shelves. But when it does, it will face tough competition from Meta and Snap Inc., both of which already offer smart glasses with built-in tech.

Meta recently deepened its partnership with Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica, debuting a second generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses. These include cameras, microphones, and AI features—paving the way for Meta’s upcoming Orion AR glasses, which aim to overlay digital content directly onto the real world. Users can make calls, snap photos, and even play games—all hands-free.

Apple’s Vision Pro marked its first step into wearable tech with mixed reality capabilities. But despite its cutting-edge technology, the headset has been criticized for being bulky and extremely expensive, starting at $3,499.

Recent reports indicate Apple has already slowed production on the Vision Pro and may halt its current version altogether. However, the company reportedly plans to redesign the device and lower the cost to make it more accessible for everyday users.

If smart glasses are next, Apple could be gearing up for a major leap forward in wearable tech—one that’s sleeker, smarter, and built for daily life.
